More and more Malayalies are getting connected to Internet every day. Expansion of Akshaya program to more districts is accelerating this. At the same time sustainable participation of community will depend on availability of locally relevant information.

Objective of the Web4all program is to create a frame work to improve participation of local people in developing content. Web4all will also develop economic opportunities for small local IT enterprises by providing training and support on buiding and hosting low cost, high quality websites.

FOSS in Science-Workshop on LaTeX and Scilab

A three-day workshop on LaTeX and Scilab will be held at UC College, Aluva from 25 February 2010. The workshop is jointly organised by IIT Bombay, SPACE, Thiruvananthapuram and Bhaskaracharya Prathisthana Institute, Pune.

The workshop will consist of lectures and hands-on sessions in LaTeX and Scilab. LaTeX is a document preparation system that can produce good-looking documents without much difficulty, especially technical documents that contain equations. Its popularity is increasing in Kerala, and it is now part of the Mathematics curriculum of Calicut University.

The inauguration of training for the differently abled, jointly conducted by the Kerala State IT Mission and District Panchayat was held on 30th January 2010. Hon. District Panchayat President Sri. Anavoor Nagappan inaugurated the programme.

 

KSITM Director Dr. Rathan Kelkar IAS, Sri. Anad Jayan( Member, District Panchayat), Sri. V.S Santosh ( Secretary, District Panchayat), Sri. K.Vijayachandran ( Director, Future India Foundation), Sri T.M Suresh Kumar (District Social Welfare Officer) and Dr. V. Sasikumar (Coordinator, SPACE) were also present for the function. Sri. V.S Aravind (Chairman, Social Welfare Standing Committee) presided over the function.

 

The first batch of training for 10 visually challenged will begin on 1st February 2010. The training will attempt to equip them with the required free software ICT tools.

Inauguration by Vice Chancellor

The Inauguration of Insight Centre at Calicut University was held on 28th January 2010 at CHMK Library, Calicut University. Hon. Vice Chancellor, Smt. Anwar Jahan Zuberi inaugurated the centre. The centre inside the C.U library, will benefit the Visually Challenged students to access the huge repository of e-Books and e-Journals available in the library. Free training will also be given to the students at the centre on Ubuntu platform using the Orca screen reader.

Insight will shortly  be conducting a training programme for the
library staff of Calicut University on accessible technologies for the Visually
Challenged.

A two day training programme was held for the Akshaya Entrepreneurs at Alleppey on 19th and 20th January 2010, for training the Visually Challenged in using computers. 57 Akshaya Entrepreneurs participated in the training programme which was held at Cherthala and Purakkadu Akshaya centres. A technical quiz programme was conducted on the final day and prizes were distributed. Certificates were also issued for all the participants.

An interactive programme with parents of autistic children and Dr Arun Mehta was organised at insight on 13th january . Dr Mehta enlightened them on Skid, a free software package similar to Gcompris which the children are already working with. Skid has many tiny modules that a child can select and combine, based on the specific task she wishes to perform. Parents were happy to note that ICT training through packages like Skid or Gcompris can really help an autistic child to communicate in real life situations.

INSIGHT Conducts Seminar on Empowering the Differently Abled

The Kerala State IT Mission as part of their initiative to to bring the benefits of ICT to the differently abled through its INSIGHT project conducted a seminar on the topic “Empowering the Differently Abled” on 13th January 2010 at Malabar Hall, Technopark. Shri Mervin Alexander, CEO, Technopark delivered the welcome speech. Dr. Rathan Kelkar IAS, Director, KSITM, in his introductory remarks, enlightened the audience about the activities done by Kerala IT Mission to empower the differently abled. He also added that efforts would be made through INSIGHT to assist the companies in identifying the right candidates and giving them job-related training.

This was followed by a presentation by INSIGHT detailing the activities done for empowering and employing the differently abled. The highlight of the presentation was demonstrations by two visually challenged students. A talk by Dr. Arun Mehta, Chairman, Department  of CE, JMIT, on “Employing Differently abled” followed. He said he was amazed by the ideas that were being conceived and implemented in Kerala and insisted that it would be wonderful if Kerala could set a role model in the field of empowering the differently abled as well.

Mr Mathew Jacob of Nest Technologies suggested that the companies should change their mindset regarding employing a differently abled person. The experience that he has had from employing differently abled in company makes him a strong votary of this cause, he added. Shri. Satish Babu, CEO, Inapp Technologies proposed a vote of thanks.

An awareness programme for Akshaya Entrepreneurs about Insight’s activities and the course that it offered to Visually Challenged students was held at Akshaya District office, Alleppey on 7th January. More than 150 entrepreneurs participated in the programme.

Insight will shortly give training to the interested entrepreneurs so that some of the training currently being offered at the Insight centre, is available through Akshaya centres of Alleppey as well.

Training for Shalom Special School Teachers

Another batch of 13 more teachers from Shalom special school Vattapara attended the one day ICT training programme on 6th January. In the first session teachers were introduced to the free software educational package “Gcompris” and in the subsequent session they experienced individually the benefits of “Gcompris” package .

Many of the special educators  felt that the package will ultimately help the mentally challenged children  in their cognitive development.

ICT Training for Special Educators

A one day ICT Training Programme was conducted on 31st December 2009 for the special educators of Marion Play Home, Edayilakonam and Shalom Special School, Vattapara. Nine teachers from these institutes participated at the training programme. The teachers were helped to get familiarised with Gcompris, the free software educational package. Special educators  find Gcompris package  helpful in improving the functional academic concept of the intellectually disabled children.

Feedbacks from the teachers suggest that the teachers would greatly appreciate the programme if the medium of instruction of the Gcompris package is  in Malayalam.

The training was on the use of computers as part of enriching their pedagogy with the latest ICT tools.

A training program on ICT tools for the differently abled was given to special educators of Calicut Higher Secondary School for handicapped, Snehamahal Special school for mentally handicapped and APH Vocational Centre for differently abled at Kozhikode District on 23rd and 24th December 2009. The training was conducted in two phases, free software tools for the visually challenged on the first day and special educational packages like ‘Gcompris’ on the second day for teachers handling mentally challenged children. Thirteen visually challenged teachers and ten special educators were trained through this program.

A one day ICT training programme was conducted on 21st December for the teachers of “Rotary Institute for Children in Need of Special Care.” The training was held at the Insight office in Vellayambalam. Nine teachers of the institute participated in the programme. The teachers were introduced to free soft ware educational packages like “Gcompris” which will be beneficial for the mentally challenged and autistic children in communication and social development.

Feed back from the teachers suggest that similar training programmes can be more useful if they are extended to few more days.

Second soft skills development programme concluded

The two months Soft Skills Development programme for 14 Visually Challenged Students has been concluded. The programme was held from 12th October to 19th December 2009. Apart from developing their communication skills, this course was also an effort to equip them with the required Free Software ICT tools as well. Various exercises and activities were conducted for developing their language and communication skills. A mock test was conducted for the students on 19th December. The final exam for certification will be held in January 2010.

Over 1,500 physically challenged people took part in World Disability Day Celebration at the Govt. Central School, Attakulangara, Trivandrum on December 3, 2009. Hon. Minister for Transport, Shri. Jose Thettayil, inaugurated the function. The event was organized by Social Welfare Department and Kerala State Handicapped Persons Welfare Corporation.Insight was given a chance to participate in the event by setting up a stall.

Around 1000 physically challenged children from different special schools visited the stall. Insight demonstrated their regular activities based on the latest ICT tools to children, parents and teachers who visited the stall. Visitors were also introduced to some educational games, which would help children with learning disabilities to develop their overall abilities.

Our Visually Challenged trainers and students demonstrated using computers with the help of free screen reading software Orca. Some physically challenged visitors came with specific needs like learning to burn a CD, formatting a memory card etc. Copies of Swaram audio magazine and Ubuntu 9.10 cd’s were also distributed. Presentations of Insight’s day to day activities and documentaries were also displayed.

Apart from being amusing the children, the programme helped to create awareness about the activities of INSIGHT to parents and teachers of differently abled.

Training for Palakkad and Kannur Districts completed

20 Visually Challenged school teachers were given training in the use of computers as part of enriching their pedagogy with the latest ICT tools in Palakkad and Kannur districts this month.

The 5 day training program for the Visually Impaired school teachers in Palakkad,was conducted from 19-23rd October 2009 at the IT@School district resource centre, Palakkad. Ten teachers from different schools in the district attended the training sessions.

10 teachers participated in the training programme held in Kannur district from 27 to 31 October. The training was held at the IT@School resource centre.

Web accessibility workshop concludes

 Sept 26 2009: The two day Web Accessibility workshop hosted by SPACE and Centre for Internet and Society and supported by Kerala State IT Mission concluded at Christ Nagar International School today. 43 participants from various Government departments and private firms took part in the workshop. The aim of the workshop was to educate web developers of Government and non Government agencies on how to develop websites that are equally accessible to people with disabilities.
